Obituary

Barry Allen Deutch, 80, passed away peacefully in Florida on October 4, 2022, after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father and uncle. Barry was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Bowen High School and received a bachelor’s degree in Education from Roosevelt University. Set up on a blind date by both of their mothers, Barry and Fern first met. She was a freshman at Bowen, and he was a freshman at the University of Illinois. They married on January 30, 1966. Barry was employed as a teacher at Altgeld Gardens public school. Upon his father’s passing, Barry left teaching to take over the proprietorship of bowling centers throughout Chicagoland. He was a dedicated businessman, working countless hours ensuring the businesses’ success. Many family vacations were spent, crisscrossing the United States visiting extended family, historical sites and natural wonders while listening to his favorite music in the station wagon or custom van. Not surprisingly, Barry enjoyed bowling, participating in many leagues and tournaments. Once retired, Barry and Fern relocated to Florida, where he enjoyed new friends, was an active member of Temple Beth Shalom and his local Bocce league. Barry continued to enjoy bowling, water exercise, traveling, taking cruises and special trips to Montreal and England. He was also an avid golfer, poker player, fast food aficionado, television and movie fan. He always loved a good steak dinner, key lime pie and ice cream. Barry is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Fern (née Satovitz) and children, Michelle and Jeff (Michelle Voss). He is also survived by his sister Diane Deutch Pavia and nephews Tony and Brian. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Rae (née Pritikin) Deutch. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Beth Shalom of Cape Coral, www.templebethshalomcc.org.
